THE class of 2009 beamed with pride as they reaped the reward of years of hard work at their university graduation ceremony.More than 250 students of University Centre Peterborough attended a spectacular graduation ceremony in Peterborough Cathedral yesterday (Thursday).
It is now hoped that the graduates will help make Peterborough's future brighter, by keeping their skills in the city for years to come.
The students graduated from courses including history, engineering and construction.
This year's ceremony was the third held by the Peterborough centre, which is part of the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
University centre project manager Mandip Bassi said the day was very important both for the graduates and Peterborough as a city.
He said: "It is obviously a really proud moment for the graduates and their friends and family.
"Everyone has put in a lot of hard work to get this far, and this is just reward for all their efforts. But it is also great news for the city itself.
"Cities such as Nottingham see many of their graduates stay on and continue to work there.
"If Peterborough businesses can attract these graduates to stay here and keep their skills here, it can only be good for the city."
The ceremony saw the 272 graduates parade through the city in the traditional cap and gown, before individually picking up their degree papers.
There was also a speech from property entrepreneur Ronnie Shahmoon, who spoke to the graduates about maximising their opportunities.
Mr Bassi said: "We are very pleased that Ronnie could come and make the speech for us, and I hope that everyone can take on board the messages that he said.
"We also had string quartet Inter Mezzo playing and a fantastic buffet reception for everyone."
This year, the first purpose-built university centre was opened in Peterborough, with 700 students attending. Previously the university students had shared buildings with those at Peterborough Regional College.
It is planned that when the centre is finally completed, more than 4,000 students will be able to complete university level courses in the city.
