Jeremy Roberts, another former president of the Law Society, said he was shocked to hear the news.
He said: "It really is tragic news. Richard was a well-respected member of the law profession, and was involved in many activities with the society.
"Even when he retired he kept his finger on the pulse.
"He always had a great sense of humour, and was a very imposing man.
"It really is a tragic loss and he will be sorely missed."
Mr Roberts also said Mr Hill was very keen for youngsters to get involved in law.
He said: "He was always encouraging youngsters to get involved and become solicitors.
"He also played a big part in the Territorial Army in the city, and was very keen for youngsters to get involved in the TA.
"He loved to be outside, and was very keen on shooting and fishing."
V|ice-chairman of the Friends of Peterborough Hospitals Kevan Arbon said Mr Hill had worked very hard while he was a member of the board.
He said: "The first thing to say about Richard was he was a gentleman.
"He played a very active role and was always arranging events to raise money for the hospitals.
"We have a number of shops in Peterborough District Hospital and Edith Cavell Hospital, and he was always supporting them.
"I can still see him now selling raffle tickets to people to raise money.
"Even when he had to stand down because of ill health he continued to support us."
"He was very much a leading light across Peterborough, and I was very sad to hear the news."
