LOVING tributes have been paid to the inspirational father of one of the city's top athletes.John Hollman, father of heptathlete Julie, passed away with his family at his side, after a two-year battle with lung cancer earlier this month.

The 67-year-old of Church Street, Deeping St James, near Market Deeping, was described by his family as a great character, a true gentleman and also a bit of a daredevil.

However, most importantly, Mr Hollman was said to be a "very brave man" who never complained about his illness and enjoyed life to the full.

The Evening Telegraph reported in August how Mr Hollman, who worked at Perkins Engines for 40 years, was unable to travel to Beijing and missed seeing his daughter's dream come true in the Olympic arena.

Heptathlete Julie defied injury to compete at the Beijing Olympics.

Mr Hollman leaves behind his wife of 39 years Carole, children Anne, Julie and James and grandson Liam James.

His funeral will take place at the Priory Church in Deeping St James on January 5 at 2.30pm followed by a cremation at Marholm at 3.30pm.

All friends and colleagues are welcome. The family have requested that donations be made to Cancer Research, which can be sent to RJ Scholes, 4 Horsegate, Deeping St James, Peterborough, PE6 8EN.
