THE sister of Martin Sharpe, who dedicated much of his life to looking after his neighbours has paid a loving tribute to the brother who did "so much" for his friends.Martin, of Main Street, Ailsworth, near Peterborough, died unexpectedly at his home on December 31. The 71-year-old had lived in the house for all but six months of his life.

Born to Sidney and Olive Sharpe on February 26, 1937, as one of 11 children, Martin was educated at Castor Infant School, and later Arthur Mellows Village College, in Glinton.

Martin's sister, Janet Griffin, from Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, said: "Martin was a very bright student, and in his final year he became a prefect."

After working on a farm in Castor and Chapman's Bakery, in Fletton, Peterborough, Martin was called up for national service in 1955, where he trained to be chef. He was posted to Korea and visited Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

On leaving the army, Martin joined the Co-op, delivering milk around Millfield, Peterborough, before he was later promoted to supervisor and stayed with the company for 35 years.

But the people of the city district were disappointed to see Martin go and even wrote him a personal poem to thank him for his service and friendly nature.

In Martin's earlier years he watched King's Lynn speedway team and also enjoyed his garden, music, comedy shows, pantomimes and spent a lot of time writing down poems.

Such was the wealth of feeling for Martin that the Ailsworth Methodist Church was packed with about 70 people paying their respects at his funeral.

Mrs Griffin added: "He had three sets of keys to different houses if people went away and he would go and check the house regularly and put the lights on. He did so much for people and he will be sadly missed."
