Travel: Parkway misery is set to get worse
MOTORISTS to the north and east of Peterborough already suffering the misery of multi-million pound parkway roadworks be warned – it is going to get much worse before it gets better.
MOTORISTS to the north and east of Peterborough already suffering the misery of multi-million pound parkway roadworks be warned – it is going to get much worse before it gets better. That is the message from city council highways chiefs today, as they struggle with the difficult task of co-ordinating a number of important improvement projects aimed at limiting congestion and supporting the future growth of the city in the coming months.
The 4 million structural improvements and maintenance to three bridges – crossing the River Nene, Bishop's Road and the Fletton Avenue/Whittlesey Road intersection on the Frank Perkins Parkway – got under way last month.
And until their expected completion in October, motorists using what is one of the busiest stretches of parkway in the city will continue to crawl through lane closures and 40mph speed limits enforced by average speed cameras.

But with the new projects – some underway and some about to come online, including the 4.5 million redevelopment of the Eye Roundabout junction of the Frank Perkins Parkway and Paston Parkway which will start in September – head of environment and transport David Farquhar admitted: "Despite our best efforts to keep disruption to a minimum we know that there will be delays and we apologise for that.
"There is a significant concentration of work running through to next spring. These are important projects and it is essential that they are carried out now. We are doing our best to schedule the works to minimise problems for motorists.
"However, it would be sensible for people to find other routes or change their normal travel times to avoid affected areas as much as possible. Where possible, people may wish to consider car-sharing or using public transport."
Mr Farquhar added: "We succeeded in obtaining Growth Area Funding from the Government specifically for some of these projects, which have to be completed within the current year.
"We know that drivers will be unhappy about the delays involved, but these improvements to the transport infrastructure will bring long-term benefits for the future."
The full list of other projects being scheduled for coming months include:
A 4.5 million installation of traffic lights, additional lanes and pedestrian crossing points at the Junction 8 intersection between Frank Perkins Parkway and Paston Parkway.
Construction of an access to a new garden centre development will require the closure of Peterborough Road between Junction 8 and Eye village roundabout for three weeks from July 31. The 25 million Peterborough Garden Park being built on 14 acres formerly occupied by Parkway Sports and Social Club off Peterborough Road, Eye, is due to open in early 2010. The scheme will include a garden centre, outdoor plant area, shops, caf and 413 car spaces.
Additional lanes and flyover strengthening at the Junction 20 intersection between Paston Parkway and the A47. This project, due for completion in July, is linked to construction of the new 80 million A1073 route between Peterborough and Spalding.
Traffic calming measures estimated at 600,000 will be installed in Welland Road – starting later this year – to discourage "rat- running" by drivers when the new A1073 road opens.
Two road maintenance schemes, each lasting four weeks, will affect Guntons Road and Bridge Hill Road near Newborough from the middle of June.
In addition, EDF Energy Networks is undertaking further works to commission new cable circuits installed along Oundle Road last year to improve the electricity network in Peterborough.
