CELEBRITY golfers aimed to hit the ball straight and "true" to reach "gold" standard at a charity golf tournament organised by Spandau Ballet star Tony Hadley.The Tony Hadley Golf Classic took place at Elton Furze Golf Club near Peterborough yesterday, with well-known names picking up their clubs to take part,including Royle Family actor Ralf Little and ex-Arsenal footballer Micky Nunn.

All chipped in donations for Hadley’s chosen charity, Action Medical Research’s Touching Tiny Lives campaign, which funds research to prevent premature births.

The event is now in it’s fifth year, and last year raised 17,000. This year’s total is not yet known.

To give the 120 golfers a boost on on their round, they were given a gold bar on the ninth hole, in a reference to the host Hadley’s singing career.

Chairwoman of Action Medical Research Angela Hyde,, said: “It has been a really fantastic day and there has been a great atmosphere.

“We have had a jazz band and glasses of Pimm’s in the clubhouse for the golfers when they have finished their round.

“We know that we are in the credit crunch, but everyone has been very generous.”

After the competition had finished, the players went to the traditional “19th hole” for a champagne reception.

Comedian Bobby Davro provided the evening entertainment, though he had been unable to tee off earlier in the day because of a shoulder injury.

Former Wales football manager Bobby Gould acted as auctioneer, with lots including the chance to dance the night away on Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke’s national tour.

Action Medical Research w as set up in 1952, and funds research to improve the health and quality of life for everyone.

It is credited with playing a crucial role in developing the polio vaccine in the UK.
