Thorney turbine risk to 2,500 aircraft - RAF
FURTHER evidence about how 13 wind turbines proposed in the Thorney area could affect RAF radars has been presented at an inquiry in Peterborough.
FURTHER evidence about how 13 wind turbines proposed in the Thorney area could affect RAF radars has been presented at an inquiry in Peterborough. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) believes that building the wind farms at Wryde Croft and Nutsgrove, near Thorney, could impair its ability to guide planes through difficult weather safely from RAF Cottesmore and RAF Wittering.
The MOD said that on average Cottesmore air traffic control provides a service to 2,484 aircraft in the area per month, including civilian aircraft from airfields in Crowland, Chatteris and Sibson.
Evidence submitted to the inquiry said: "In marginal weather conditions, the ability to assure the safety of the airspace can be vital.
"Flying operations within Class G (uncontrolled) airspace are unpredictable and controllers must maintain awareness of the developing air picture and loss of radar coverage will lead to degraded situation awareness and increase risk to aircraft."
Wind farm developers RES (Wryde Croft) and WPR Wind (Nutsgrove) are scheduled to respond today and Tuesday.
