A TEENAGER locked up for raping two boys aged six and eight in a public park will be released from custody in just one year. The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sexually assaulted the youngsters in Welland Park, Welland, Peterborough, last year.

He denied carrying out the terrifying attacks at Peterborough Crown Court in March, but was found guilty of two counts of rape by the jury and returned to court yesterday for sentence.

During the trial, the court heard the teenager, who was 14 at the time, cornered the two helpless young boys behind some bushes, put his hands round their throats and sexually assaulted them.

Mitigating, Tyrone Belger said the attacks had been a one-off spontaneous incident and that he was of a previous good character.

He said: “The defendant should be given a greater degree of latitude, because this defendant may develop and change with age, because of his youth.”

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Coleman told the youth he was worried he might commit further crimes in the future.

He said: “You present a risk, and unless that risk is addressed, then someone else could become a victim of your crime. I hope not.”

Judge Coleman sentenced the youth to two years, of which he will serve half in a young offenders’ institute and the other half out on licence.

The teenager was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register.
