Tacklefest 2009: A reel-y good time was had by all

THOUSANDS of angling enthusiasts took the bait of the promise of a reel-ly good time as they packed the Embankment this weekend for Tacklefest.

THOUSANDS of angling enthusiasts took the bait of the promise of a reel-ly good time as they packed the Embankment this weekend for Tacklefest. The annual show has been running for more than six years at its home near the Key Theatre, in Peterborough, with regular crowds of around 10,000 visitors.

It is host to everything fishing-related, suitable for both seasoned professionals and complete beginners, including the latest tackle, demonstrations, hints and tips. The centrepiece of this year's event, which has been hailed a success by organisers, was a 25m x 8m demonstration pool.

Alex Ioannou, marketing assistant for organiser's Bauer, said: "It's just a great regional day out for the fishing community to come out and enjoy.

"We have a fantastic time and there's always thousands of people here."

Angling Times reporter Antony Grigorjevs, from Woodston, said: "Some of the biggest names in angling have been here, as well as the traders and retailers.

"Bob Roberts is a really approachable guy, with great skill too, and Steve Ringer is a great commercial angler."

The event also saw many young and inexperienced anglers showing off their skills and learning new ones on the banks of the River Nene.

But they were replaced by some of the country's best match anglers on Sunday, as they did battle in what is billed as the FA Cup of fishing, with some of the biggest names on the UK match scene.

Billy Coles, a 14-year-old who travelled from Royston, near Cambridge, to attend said: "I fish quite a lot and I just come down here to get new fishing equipment and tackle."
