VOLUNTEERS from local churches will soon be patrolling the city centre to give a reassuring presence and a friendly face to people on the streets.Street Pastors are Christians from local churches who volunteer their time on Saturdays, between 10.30pm and 4am.
They will be chatting to people, helping those who are vulnerable and in need to ensure they get home safely, and be armed with things such as water for those who are dehydrated and a brush and dustpan to clear up broken glass.
Nationally, the scheme is run by the Ascension Trust and is supported by the Home Office, but locally the scheme is supported by the Safer Peterborough Partnership, the police and Peterborough City Council.
The launch is on Saturday, December 13, at 7.30pm, in St Mary's Church, New Road, and the Street Pastors will go out on patrol in the city centre for the first time that night.
