Stanground College pupils are quick with the bricks

A GROUP of pupils at Stanground College have stunned their teacher by showcasing bricklaying skills it should have taken them another year to achieve.Advanced skills teacher of construction and technology at the school, in Peterborough Road Charlie Barker said this year's cohort had made great efforts when learning new building skills, but even he was surprised at how well they did on their very first attempt at bricklaying.

He said: "This is not an easy skill to acquire and there's a lot that can go wrong, but these lads have really excelled themselves. "The walls and corners they have built are better than some I've seen produced by adults and that is a testimony to their determination to get it right."

The pupils were happy with their achievements

Chris Brown (15) said: "When Mr Barker told me how well I'd done, I felt really proud of myself.

"The great thing about this lesson is that the skills you are learning are ones that you'll be able to use to get a job or even set up in business yourself."

The course at Stanground is very popular and there are pupils queuing up to get a place.

Next year, the college will be offering the new diploma in construction.
