Stanground: Green fire crews are to harness solar power

ENERGY saving solar panels have been installed at Stanground Fire Station.

ENERGY saving solar panels have been installed at Stanground Fire Station. The move is the latest initiative by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service to ensure its buildings are running at their most energy efficient.

The panels, which pre-heat the water going into a new high efficiency condensing boiler system, form a prominent feature on the low level roof to the rear of the station.

It is estimated they will reduce the amount of gas used by 25 per cent, which will save the fire service around 900 per year.

The service's property group also plans to insulate the heating pipe work in the appliance bay at Stanground Fire Station in Belle Vue, Stanground, Peterborough, which will also help to save energy.

Head of property Danny Rust said: "Switching to rooftop solar panels will not only save the service money, but will also reduce our carbon footprint while sending out a strong message to the community about our commitment to helping the environment."

The installation is the latest in a series of energy efficiency improvements. Condensing boilers have now been fitted in nine CFRS sites to replace the older boiler systems and enhanced efficiency controls for heating have been fitted at Dogsthorpe, Huntingdon and Wisbech.

Further energy saving measures include the fitting of replacement double glazing, the installation of high efficiency fluorescent light fittings during all station re-wires, additional roof insulation during reroofing works, the insulation of cavity walls and replacement of single skinned roof lights with double skinned.
