St John Fisher School's week of 50th celebrations

THERE was a party atmosphere at St John Fisher, Peterborough's only catholic secondary school, as pupils and staff rang in its 50th birthday with a week-long celebration. The group organising the activities to mark St John Fisher Catholic High School's milestone pushed the boat out, with events from a time capsule burial to a moving Mass.

During an open afternoon, visitors, including former pupils, browsed the carefully preserved archive going back to when the school first opened its doors on April 14, 1959, in Park Lane, Eastfield.

There was also a chance to see the very first uniforms worn by youngsters in the '50s.

School history expert and ex-pupil Peter Waszak was one of the main organisers of the delicate display material.

The process of sorting and setting out the atrium display was painstaking, and it took a day to put it up and another to take it down.

He also shared his memories of the school with guests.

The Mass was one of the most anticipated events, with Bishop Michael Evans leading it with other deanery priests in school.

The Mass had a dramatic start with Indian drums being played by pupils past and present

The hymns, some of which were composed especially for the service, were led by the school choir.

After Mass, with the help of members of the school council, Bishop Michael planted the first of many memorial trees, in memory of those connected with the school who had passed away.

It is hoped that each year, on St John Fisher Day, the school will plant more trees that have been donated in memory of loved ones.

Then guests had the chance to tuck into delicious multi-cultural dishes prepared by pupils, from countries around the world, representing the diverse nature of the school community.

On the last day of term, a celebration just for pupils and staff was held, including a barbecue and a chance for youngsters to experience a lesson with a '50s theme.

Organisers said the celebrations were a success thanks to a huge effort by all involved.

If you want to donate a tree, call the school after it reopens next term on 01733 343 646.
