Spelling bee team earns its stripes

WORDS such as "topography" and "mitigate" were spelled out loud and clear by Oundle pupils at The Times Spelling Bee competition.The team – Richard Taylor, Serena Shah and Molly Williams, with Jack Ireson as a reserve – all aged between 11 and 12, created a buzz as they beat seven other schools in their heat at the Lincoln Odeon on Friday.
Teacher at Oundle School Laura Burden said: “I’m really pleased that all their efforts have been rewarded, especially as the standard was so high.”
Richard Taylor (12) said: “We really enjoyed it. My team-mates were great.”
In second place was Orchard School, from Retford, Nottinghamshire with Spalding Grammar School coming third.
Oundle School will go forward to The Times Spelling Bee semi-finals in May, with the chance to become one of 10 winning teams to travel to London to compete in the Grand Final, at the Odeon West End, in Leicester Square, on Tuesday, June 23.
