The overall total raised stood at 20,309,747 at the end of Friday nights BBC telethon, just short of the amount raised at the same stage last year.

In 2008 the appeal raised over 38 million in total.

The appeal was first broadcast on TV in 1980, and the Pudsey mascot was first seen in 1985.
