Ex-policeman Bernard Stanyon is set to celebrate his diamond wedding after 60 sparkling years of marriage to his belle, Marjorie.Former bobbie Bernard Stanyon, whose beat covered Peterborough, Huntingdon and villages in Cambridgeshire, will mark the milestone with his wife Marjorie (81) and 28 members of their family at the Orton Hall Hotel, in Oundle Road, Orton Longueville, Peterborough.

The great-grandfather, who has led an action-packed life as a constable and before that as a Royal Marine, still counts his blessings after a lucky escape during an air raid during the Second World War.

Just 17 at the time, Mr Stanyon, of Earlswood, Orton Brimbles, Peterborough, was asleep at his home in Norwich, when a bomb almost landed on his house.

The 84-year-old said: "The house was bombed out and nearly demolished. I was in bed. I didn't get up because, before that, there had been no bombs in Norwich, and so when the air raid siren went, you didn't do anything. But this time, there was a raid.

"It was a close shave."

Luckily, Mr Stanyon was unhurt and he went into service at 18, where he was posted to the Shetland Islands.

After he was demobbed, he joined an engineering firm and it was at his company's dance at Peterborough Town Hall that he first met his future wife, Marjorie Medlock.

The couple exchanged their vows on August 6, 1949, at St Mary's Church, in Old Fletton, Peterborough.

Mr Stanyon had joined the police force two years previously, and enjoyed a 30-year career spanning stints in the traffic unit, as an advanced driving tutor and as a supervising bailiff at Peterborough County Court.

His wife worked as a supervisor for British Telecom.

The couple, who have three children, two grandsons and three great-grandchildren, credit their long marriage to tolerance and having a happy family, as well as sharing hobbies including walking, gardening and bowling.

He said: "We have taken the rough with the smooth."
