A MOVING candlelit ceremony for those who have endured the devastating loss of a baby is set to provide comfort to bereaved families next month.Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, is holding its Awareness Month at the moment, aiming to highlight the despair parents go through and the support available to them and their loved ones.
In the UK, 17 babies a day are stillborn or die during the first four weeks of life – more than 6,200 babies a year – a devastating bereavement for their parents and families.
Boston and District Sands, the local branch of the charity, is holding a Babies Remembrance Service at All Saints Church, in Moulton, near Spalding.
The service will provide an opportunity for anyone touched in any way by the death of a baby during pregnancy, at or after birth to join with others and listen to poems, music and light a candle if they wish.
A city mum was supported by the lifeline when she suffered the death of her baby Charlie in the womb at just 17 weeks in 2006.
Kirsty Dean (30), from Orton Waterville, recalled the sheer agony of hearing new born babies crying through the wall as she delivered her son stillborn.
But she said the chance to share her intense emotions with others in the same situation was therapeutic.
Miss Dean, who is now mother to Riley (10 months), said: “I lived on the Sands’ forum.
“I made two really good friends on there, and I am still in touch with one of them.
“That was my rock. The Boston Sands did invite me to meetings, but at the time, I wasn’t ready, and it was easier to hide behind your computer.”
She added: “You never get over it, but you do move on.
“I still think about Charlie every day, even more so now I’ve got Riley.
“If I didn’t have him, I think I would still be in a state of despair.
“My second pregnancy was healthy, but in my mind, it was hell on earth, because I thought Riley was going to die.
“People that haven’t been through it don’t understand, but when you talk to someone who has, you can tell them how you really feel.”
Miss Dean later nominated her midwife Liz Fleming for a Pride in Peterborough award, which she won.
The service takes place on Sunday, June 1 at 2pm.
Refreshments will be provided after the service and anyone attending will be more than welcome to join us.
