Peterborough's primary schools are set to receive an £8 million boost to transform them into eco-friendly buildings.

Peterborough's primary schools are set to receive an 8 million boost to transform them into eco-friendly buildings.Peterborough City Council is to be given the government funding to provide state-of-the-art primary schools for Peterborough children.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has announced that Peterborough will receive the cash between 2009 and 2011 with additional funding over a 12-year period.

The money has been awarded as part of the Primary Capital Programme.

The city council's children's services department was required to produce a Strategy for Change document for review by the Government.

Information on the city's educational vision, where the city is now in terms of primary education as well as the long-term aims and investment priorities were all included in the strategy.

All of Peterborough's primary schools also had to be assessed and proposals drawn up for the first stages of the new spending for government approval.

Councillor Stephen Goldspink, cabinet member for education and children's services, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for us to begin to invest in our primary schools as we have started to do with our secondary schools.

"The money will be used alongside existing grants and funding streams to produce a comprehensive programme of improvements, including as many environmentally-friendly elements as possible."

Isabel Clark, planning and development manager within Peterborough City Council's children's services, added: "Building on our current investment and track record of incorporating such things as green roofs and grey water recycling, we intend to go further in trying to meet the Government's target of zero carbon schools by 2016.

"The strategy document required by the Government provided us with an exciting challenge.

"Our solution has been praised for elements relating to ICT and the way it links to our long-term vision and investment programme.

"The funding will allow us to make improvements in outcomes for children as we work towards the best educational facilities for all."
