The Hosanna Project, a charity which helps homeless people in Peterborough has been given a welcome boost from Sainsburys. The supermarket in Oxney Road has chosen the Hosanna Project to be its charity of the year.

Over the next 12 months staff will organise a variety of fundraising events in store including bag packing and raffles, aiming to raise in excess of 5,000 for the charity.

Other events planned include Sainsburys donating food and raffle prizes for a dinner to be held in aid of the Hosanna Project in October, and the store's staff will also be involved in helping to serve a traditional Christmas dinner to the homeless at a special event on December 26.

The supermarket will also be appealing to its customers to donate hats, gloves, scarfs and other warm clothing to the charity.

The Hosanna Project is run by the city's Open Door Church and sees volunteers handing out meals and other items to homeless people every Saturday evening from St Mark's Church Hall in Lincoln Road.

Nicky Hughes, who works in human resources (HR) at Sainsburys in Oxney Road, said: "We chose the Hosanna Project because we thought the work it does is so fantastic and of real benefit to the people of Peterborough."
