THE number of unemployed people in Peterborough has risen for the 10th month running.New figures released from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the number of jobless claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance last month rose to 5.4 per cent of the working population – up 0.1 per cent from March.

According to the ONS, there were 5,550 people claiming benefits in Peterborough last month – an increase of 140 from March.

Of those out of work, 4,124 are males and 1,426 are females.

However, chief executive of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce John Bridge reiterated his belief that the figure could rise to as much as 7,500 people before it got better.

But he reminded people across the city that he still firmly believed Peterborough was better prepared compared with other towns and cities in the UK.

He said: “In the last recession, we saw more than 9,000 people out of work, and we don’t anticipate we will reach anywhere near that sort of figure..”

The number of unemployed people in Peterborough remains the highest figure seen in the city since 1996.
