CITY shoppers are leaving plastic bags at the checkout in favour of reusable alternatives in an attempt to make Peterborough the first plastic bag free city.

CITY shoppers are leaving plastic bags at the checkout in favour of reusable alternatives in an attempt to make Peterborough the first plastic bag free city.Asda supermarket in Rivergate, near the city centre, has reported a huge increase in sales of their "bags for life", as more residents try to live a greener lifestyle.

Today the store has backed the Get A Green Grip Peterborough campaign, supported by The Evening Telegraph, and will be handing out the campaign's free cotton reusable bags to shoppers later this month.

After reading about the Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) campaign in The ET, staff at the supermarket have decided to get involved themselves.

Events co-ordinator at the supermarket Sonia Joyce said: "We saw the campaign and thought that we should get involved.

"Our bags for life are very popular – earlier this week on just one checkout we sold more than 100 of them in a day, so our customers are thinking green all the time.

"We also encourage customers to reuse bags by giving tokens out to schools when they are used.

"The tokens can then be used for a green project at the schools themselves."

The Get A Green Grip campaign has also received support from high- profile green campaigners from across the country.

Penney Poyzer – known as The Queen of Green – who presents BBC2's No Waste like Home show said she was proud to be supporting the campaign.

She said: "There is so much great work being done in Peterborough to instil green living among local people – it's fantastic! This campaign highlights the way that simple lifestyle changes can make a real difference in reducing our environmental impact.

"I am delighted to be supporting the campaign, I will carry my bag with pride."

And director of Friends of the Earth UK and Ireland Tony Juniper also backed the campaign.

Mr Juniper, who has campaigned for green issues for more than 20 years, said: "This kind of grass-roots action in combating climate change is vital.

"We can't rely on politicians to take action, it is the responsibility of all of us to reduce our carbon footprint.

"Plastic bags are a particularly damaging modern convenience.

"I am supporting Peterborough's campaign and I hope that people in the city will stop using throw-away plastic bags.

"Climate change is real, and it's happening. We all need to start thinking about what we can do to make a difference."

PECT staff will be at Asda handing out the free bags on May 6 and May 10 between 10am to 2pm.
