Race For Life 2009 - 30 June: Emotions run high on a special night

IT resembled a sea of pink as women and children ran, jogged and walked in memory of sons, daughters, mums, dads, uncles, aunts, grandparents and friends who have won and lost their battles with cancer.

IT resembled a sea of pink as women and children ran, jogged and walked in memory of sons, daughters, mums, dads, uncles, aunts, grandparents and friends who have won and lost their battles with cancer. The Evening Telegraph spoke to a handful of competitors to find out why Race for Life is so important to them:

Tina Burton (36), from Bretton, Peterborough, walked the route for her mum, who is recuperating from breast cancer.

She said: "The Macmillan nurses who looked after my mum were brilliant and so I wanted to give something back.

"My mum was too ill to support me, but I know she is with me in spirit."

Hairdresser Amiee Johnson (21) and two of her colleagues from Dagnanos hairdressers, in Parnwell, Peterborough, said: "We just wanted to raise money for everyone who has been touched by cancer. Race for Life is such a fantastic way of raising money for such a good cause."

Diana Lettice (41), from Spalding, was joined by her niece and sister as they walked the 3.1 miles in memory of their grandparents.

Donning pink wigs and feathers, she said: "This is our third time and we will keep doing it because there are so many people out there suffering from cancer who need our help. The weather is great, although it took us a little longer to complete."

Teenager Selina Yeung (19), from Parnwell, Peterborough, was pushed around the route in a wheelchair by two friends after falling down the stairs and breaking her leg just weeks before the race.

The Peterborough Air Cadet said: "I was disappointed I couldn't race, but it was nice being able to sit back and enjoy the ride in such hot weather."

Sisters Jessica (13) and Bethany (15) Williams, from Warmington, near Oundle, took part for their auntie who battled with cancer last year. Bethany said: "This is our second time. Our auntie has really inspired us to raise as much as we can for charity."

Mum and daughter Teresa (40) and Lauren (15) Felton, from Park Farm, Peterborough, walked the route.

Teresa said: "My father-in-law died from cancer and a good friend of ours is battling with the illness at the moment. My daughter had to drag me round, but it was worth it."

Wearing their pink spotty pyjamas, Laura Shand (27), Jane-Marie Walton (25) and Penny Ixer (29), from Corby, took part in the race in memory of family members and Jade Goody. Laura said: "This is our first time. We were touched by Jade's battle with cancer and have lost other friends and family members to cancer, so we thought we should do our bit to help others out there."
