YOUNGSTERS have been making music with instruments from around the world.
YOUNGSTERS have been making music with instruments from around the world. From the long didgeridoo to the little bird whistle, reception and Year 1 children from William Law Primary School, in Twelvetree Avenue, Werrington were given the opportunity to experiment with the instruments.
Workshops were held throughout the day in a bid to develop the children’s understanding of musical instruments around the world.
The pupils were shown a range of different items including the didgeridoo and African drums which the children had a go at playing.
They then learned how they were individually made, and what recycled materials were used.
The children also heard how the instruments had come from Fairtrade families and how they were being paid to make the items, which would help boost their economy.
Music co-ordinator at the school, Rachel Moorhouse said: “The children had a fantastic time. They loved experimenting with the instruments and exploring all the different sounds that each one made.
“But they were also intrigued to find out how they had come from poor families who spend their days making them.”
Workshop principal John Ovenden said: “Workshops allow each child to play at least one instrument and I cover origins, weather, animals, waste materials, relaxation and drumming to illustrate ethnic music.
“The workshops have proved very popular in many schools across the East of England and some are now re-booking me for three years time.”
At the end of the day the children were given the opportunity to purchase some of the instruments they had been experimenting with from as large as a didgeridoo to a small bird whistle.
The school also purchased some of the instruments in a bid to boost their world instrument section.
