PUPILS from across Peterborough were given awards for their part in an energy saving campaign.

Youngsters gathered at the town hall yesterday to celebrate their involvement in the Powerdown project.

As part of the campaign a number of primary schools across the city switched off their computers and ate lunch by candlelight.

Twenty-six schools signed up to take part in the energy-saving day, which was a part of national Powerdown Fortnight which started on November 21 last year.

The event was co-ordinated by Peterborough City Council’s climate change team and is funded by Sustainability East.

During the fortnight, pupils learned about the impact that using energy to boil a kettle and watch television has on the environment and how to do their bit to use less.

Energy monitoring devices were installed at the schools taking part so pupils could see the effect of turning off a light, for example.

Cllr Samantha Dalton, cabinet member for environment capital, said: “Some schools went all out on Powerdown Day to see just how little energy they could use.

“We realise this is not possible every day, but just doing things like turning computer screens off when they’re not in use or turning lights off in classrooms during lunchtime can save huge amounts of energy.

“As a city with environment capital aspirations, the work of our climate change team is key in changing people’s perceptions.

“We also aim to encourage adults and children to look at how they waste energy and the simple steps they can take to reduce the amount they use.”
