Postal workers to stage two more strikes

POSTAL workers in Peterborough will stage two further strikes next week.

POSTAL workers in Peterborough will stage two further strikes next week.Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) Eastern Number 5 Branch will take industrial action on Monday, 28th and Tuesday 29th September.

Network drivers will strike from 4am on Tuesday until 4am on Wednesday.

Staff at Peterborough delivery office in Werrington will walk out from 9pm on Monday until 9pm on Tuesday.

Collection drivers in the city will strike from 4am on Tuesday to 4am on Wednesday.

Mail workers in Huntingdon delivery office will join them in strike action, from 11pm on Monday until 9pm on Tuesday.

The strikes follow walk-outs in August and earlier this month, following a row over pay and conditions between the CWU and Royal Mail management.

The union said it had no other alternative than to stage the new strikes.

A spokesman said Royal Mail continued to drive through change and place excessive workloads on delivery staff, with threats of removal of pay.

Area delivery representative Mark Cooke said: "Royal Mail is continuing to refuse to discuss in a reasonable manner and in line with national agreements, the workload of its staff, instead they prefer to bully and threaten members by attempting to stop their pay."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said "Royal Mail is getting on with modernisation in an entirely fair and reasonable way.

"We urge the CWU to stop hurting customers and to call off their strikes and provide customers with the service they need and expect from Royal Mail."
