Postal workers set to strike again

POSTAL workers in Peterborough are set to strike for the third time from Thursday (3 September).

POSTAL workers in Peterborough are set to strike for the third time from Thursday (3 September). The Communication Workers Union (CWU) confirmed that their members employed at Peterborough Delivery Office, Peterborough Distribution and Kings Lynn Sorting Office would be walking out on strike from Thursday.

Mail from business post to birthday cards will be affected right across the PE postcode area. The CWU and Royal Mail remain in deadlock over negotiations in cuts, pay and conditions.

Union representative Adam Oakes said the latest action has come about as the Royal Mail try to introduce walking speeds of over 4mph for delivery routes that take four hours to complete.

He added: "This is unworkable and will lead to 39 delivery duties being lost in the city and have a severe impact on the delivery of mail.

"A similar system is in use in Belgium that requires a walking speed of only 2mph, a system the CWU is willing to base national agreements on."

Industrial action in Peterborough Delivery Office will begin on Thursday and will last until Tuesday (8 September).

Members in Peterborough Distribution will take 24-hour industrial action from 1pm on Monday until 1pm on Tuesday.

These strikes are the latest in a string of walkouts affecting the city with both network drivers and delivery office members with the last action being taken on August 19.
