CITY golfers were on a par with the stars on Friday when they teed up to raise money for the Peterborough branch of a national medical charity. They were taking part in former pop star Tony Hadley's Golf Classic at Thorpe Wood Golf Course.
Driving their way to success were the former Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley and ex-Peterborough MP Lord Mawhinney.
The celebrities, who also included boxer Dave "Boy" Green and former Ryanair executive Michael Ryan, were paired with three local players in teams of four.
Despite the variety of backgrounds and talents, all 128 players in the 32 teams involved had one thing in common – the desire to raise money for Action Medical Research charity.
It is the fourth year the event has taken place, and it also included a plush dinner and auction at the city's Marriot Hotel once the scorecards had been counted.
After completing the front nine, Tony, who took over fronting the event four years ago from actor Geoff Hughes, said he was just trying to raise awareness for a charity not usually in the spotlight.
He added: "The charity is one of five that I am involved in and when you get the time, you do what you can for them. The people who work to organise this do a lot of it for free, they work really hard and they are fantastic.
"I don't know what's classic about my golf playing, but we get a lot of local support. There are certain people who play golf and they take it very seriously, but this event is not meant to be serious."
Charity chairwoman Angela Hyde was delighted with how the day turned out, despite a few star names dropping out to take part in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing.
Former Eastender Phil Daniels, ex-England rugby star Austin Healey and Olympic swimmer Mark Foster were all set to attend, but had to pull out to complete pre-live show training.
Angela, who said they hoped to beat last year's mammoth total of raising 15,000, said: "It's been going very well and we have to be thankful, because it's not raining."
Action Medical Research was set up in 1952, and funds research to improve the health and quality of life for everyone.
It is credited with playing a crucial role in developing the polio vaccine in the UK.
