POLICE have today blamed arsonists for two fires that were started just hours apart in the same Peterborough street.Firefighters from Dogsthorpe were called out to the first fire in Western Avenue, Dogsthorpe, at about 5.30pm on Tuesday where a blaze was started in a domestic garage.
A fire service spokeswoman said the blaze had caused minor damage to the building.
But just over four hours later, crews from Dogsthorpe and Stanground were called to a fire that had begun in a mobile classroom at the former site of John Mansfield School, also in Western Avenue, Dogsthorpe.
The spokeswoman said: "The fire was started in a pile of rubbish inside the mobile classroom.
She said: "The smouldering rubbish burned a hole in the floor. The rubbish dropped onto the ground, where it continued to smoulder."
She said the mobile classroom had been left slightly damaged by the incident.
But police say they believe the close proximity of both incidents means the fires could have been started by the same person or people.
A spokesperson for the police said: "We are looking into the possibility that these two incidents are connected and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward."
Anyone with any information on either incident should call police on 0345 456 4564 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
