Peterborough refuse collection days could change

Peterborough residents could see their bin collection days changed next month, as refuse collectors move to working a four-day week.

Peterborough residents could see their bin collection days changed next month, as refuse collectors move to working a four-day week.Peterborough City Council plans to introduce the changes from the end of November, so long as the idea is approved at an employment committee meeting on Friday.

If the plan is passed, bin collections will take place only from Tuesday to Friday.

Black bins will still be collected one week and green and brown bins – for recyclable materials and garden waste – will be collected the following week.

The collection routes are currently being revised to ensure each crew focuses on just one area – rather than several different parts of the city.

Council officers believe this will mean that three less collection vehicles are needed on the streets – cutting fuel costs and carbon emissions.

The total amount that could be saved is not yet known.

Letters will be sent out to residents in the next few weeks, once the route alterations are complete, explaining when their new collection day will be.

Commercial services director at Peterborough City Services Mike Heath said: "Residents should pay particular attention to the information that we will be circulating about changes to collection days.

Is a four-day-week for binmen a good idea?

"Our collection teams have agreed to the new system, which will re-schedule their working hours over four days.

"Householders should ensure their bins are placed at the kerbside by 6.45am on collection days and to bring the bins in when they have been emptied."

The new system means bin collectors will still work 37 hours a week but will have longer working days. There will be no redundancies.

The council says the four-day week will mean no disruption during weeks where there is a Bank Holiday Monday. Currently, bin crews have the Monday off and work Tuesday to Friday with a catch-up day on Saturday.

Having the four-day week as standard would remove the need for the catch-up day.

Officers say the new system would also allow more flexibility during Christmas collections.

Consultations have taken place between the council and trade union representatives for the bin collectors.

After a ballot, members voted in favour of changing to the four-day week.
