Peterborough living green dream thanks to eco festival

GREEN looks set to become Peterborough's favourite colour following the massive success of the two-week long eco festival.More than 10,000 people took part in the summer spectacular organised by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT).
And on the event's 18th birthday, the green charity said the Green Festival has finally come of age.
The festival, which ended on Sunday, has been the most successful one yet according to communities team officer Janine Starling, from PECT, and a sudden heatwave certainly gave the event a helping hand.
Janine said: "The launch day on Saturday, May 23, had a fantastic buzz, and there were definitely more people attending than we have had in previous years."

"We had some great activities for the whole family to enjoy, and the entertainment with the junk band was superb.
"But it was also down to the fact that the Green Festival has moved from being quite a niche event into something much more mainstream."
This year the charity also had many "firsts", with the swish clothes swap, the cycle race, and the eco-fashion show in Queensgate being major reasons for pulling in a more diverse crowd.
And PECT admits that a range of issues such as the credit crunch and obesity epidemic actually worked in its favour, with city residents looking for cheaper and healthier alternatives in their daily lives.
Janine added: "I think a lot of factors made the Grow It, Cook It, Eat It theme very relevant for local people.
"Peterborough Primary Care Trust is really pushing healthy living with its Change 4 Life campaign.
"People are thinking about eating locally sourced produce and growing their own to cut food miles which relate to the distance food travels to reach your plate
"And the credit crunch means people are staying at home for the summer and looking for fun, inexpensive things to do.
"They are also thinking about growing their own food and cooking from scratch because it's cheaper."
And despite torrential rain at the grand finale summer party organised by Riverford Organic Veg at Sacrewell Farm on Sunday, more than 500 people still turned out to join in.
Event organisers are now seeking ideas for the theme of next year's Green Festival, which will launch on Saturday, May 22.
The theme in 2008 was Get A Green Grip, where reusable carrier bags were given out to cut the number of plastic bags in the city, and this year the theme was Grow It, Cook It, Eat It, focusing on healthy eating, growing your own food and supporting local farmers.
