Peterborough's key health centres are unveiled

Two buildings which form a key part of health chiefs' vision to provide Peterborough with healthcare facilities fit for the 21st century have been unveiled.Work on the City Care Centre and Cavell Centre is now complete, and yesterday the buildings were handed over by the contractors.

Today, it is the turn of the Walk-In Centre to open its doors in the care centre in Thorpe Road, and other services in the health hub will be introduced in stages in the next few months.

Chief executive at NHS Peterborough Angela Bailey said: "It will be very much business as usual for the Walk-In Centre, but we are planning to expand.

"One of the reasons the move was agreed following a public consultation was to allow us to develop a purpose-built minor illness and injury unit, which could provide diagnostic tests such as x-ray and ultrasound."

She added: "After years of planning, it is really exciting that the City Care Centre will be opening its doors to patients."

Meanwhile, the 102-bed Cavell Centre, on the existing Edith Cavell Hospital site in Bretton offering mental health services, will open to patients on May 27.

The Rivergate Walk-In Centre will still be used for other services, including sexual health.
