IT might have been going for more than 50 years, but standards were as high as ever at the 2009 Peterborough Drama Festival. The event took place over two weekends at Dogsthorpe infant and junior schools in Central Avenue, and hundreds once again rose to the challenge in categories such as choral speaking, group acting, storytelling, solo acting and mime.

Committee member Gillian Warren said: " It was fantastic, and we seem to get more than ever taking part these days.

"And, of course, the standards were as high as ever. Children these days have so much more going on in their lives and are not as timid as they used to be many years ago. They really put a lot into it."

The festival always attracts between 800 and 1,000 competitiors – with many city schools entering as well as some from further afield including Somersham, Stamford and Grantham.

"The festival has developed a reputation over the years," Mrs Warren added. "We always contact schools in October to let them know in plenty of time that it is coming up."
