Peterborough City Hospital completion nears as crane goes

Two towering cranes, which have dominated the Bretton skyline for more than a year and a half, are on their way to being a thing of the past.

Two towering cranes, which have dominated the Bretton skyline for more than a year and a half, are on their way to being a thing of the past. With construction work nearing an end on the site of the new City Hospital, the cranes, which have rivalled the more picturesque Peterborough Cathedral as the most prominent landmark rising above the flat landscape, are deemed surplus to requirement.

The first tower crane was taken down piece by piece on Wednesday – captured on camera by Evening Telegraph reader Mike Sampson, from Bretton, Peterborough.

And its partner is set to be similarly dismantled early next week in a move associate project director Angela Broekhuizen said marked "a major construction milestone for the new Peterborough City Hospital".

She added: "The exterior is nearing completion and we expect that the building will be watertight in the next few weeks.

"The hospital is on schedule to open to patients in November 2010, and internally work is progressing well. Interior walls have been installed and work is continuing to lay the flooring.

"We are delighted with the progress of the new hospital, which will provide state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, as well as new services for patients, such as radiotherapy."

And West ward councillor Samantha Dalton welcomed the news, saying it would be nice to get the skyline back.

She said: "I am pleased to see the cranes go, as they have been looming over us for nearly two years.

"This is now a really exciting time for the city with all these projects going on, and to have such a fantastic facility on our doorstep is great news for everyone."
