THE UK Independence Party (UKIP) has won its first-ever seat on Cambridgeshire County Council following a by-election in Ramsey.

THE UK Independence Party (UKIP) has won its first-ever seat on Cambridgeshire County Council following a by-election in Ramsey. The landmark victory was announced on Thursday following the death of Liberal Democrat candidate Ray Powell, last month.

Peter Reeve, for UKIP, romped home with 865 votes, leaving Susan Normington, for the Conservative Party, second, with 682 votes and Liberal Democrat Anthony Hulme in third with 308, while Labour candidate Susan Coomey came fourth with 53 votes. The turnout was 30.2 per cent.

The result means Mr Reeve will also represent the ward on Huntingdonshire District Council.

The result means the make-up of the 68-strong county council is 42 Conservatives, 23 Liberal Democrats, two Labour and one each for UKIP and the Green Party.

Meanwhile, Trish Shrapnel, for the Liberal Democrats, was elected on to Huntingdonshire District Council following a parish council election this week.

Mrs Shrapnel was elected with 242 of the votes, with Bill Hensley for The Conservatives in second, with 207 votes, and Ann Beevor, for the Labour Party, in third, with 138 votes.
