Orton residents baffled by junction dysfunction

Orton Malborne residents have been left baffled after council workers dug up an area of grassland to widen a road junction – just a year after they had covered it up.It is the third time the junction at Toftland, in Orton Malborne, Peterborough, has been changed to include a bus-only left turn filter lane in the last 12 months.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "Last year the council dug up the bus lane at the staggered junction. Why, I do not know as six weeks later the contractors came along, dug it up and re-grassed it.

"Yet, last week they returned and put in more Tarmac.

"How much money is being wasted on something of no apparent use?"

However, a Peterborough City Council spokeswoman said the junction had been modified last summer to allow buses to turn left onto the Leighton bus route because road works had blocked the right turn.

She said: "This was necessary while traffic calming measures were being installed outside Leighton Primary School and to allow the road to be resurfaced. The junction was reinstated once the works outside the school were completed.

"The original junction was constructed so vehicles could make a right hand turn onto Leighton but prevented vehicles turning left onto the Leighton bus route.

"To allow buses to take a diverted route and safely turn left onto the temporary diversion route it was necessary to remove the original junction and level the area."

However, since those works were completed, the spokeswoman said a section of the bus route, where it joins Brewerne, has since collapsed and now requires resurfacing.

She added: "As a result it has been necessary to once again temporarily modify the junction to allow buses to safely turn left onto the diversion route while repair work takes place. This was agreed to be the most effective way to keep bus services operating with minimum disruption for the public. It is also preferable to carrying out the work during he night in a residential area."

Councillor Janet Goodwin who represents the Orton Malborne ward added: "The council would not waste money digging up and then re-grassing a road if it wasn't necessary. The works that are being carried out are important to ensure the bus lane can operate as normal."
