Old Still is Peterborough's newest art gallery

PUNTERS will be swapping pints for paintings after The Old Still pub in Peterborough city centre was transformed into an art gallery. The Old Still, in Westgate Arcade, Peterborough, closed in March 2008 and while a new landlord is sought for the pub Queensgate bosses have given five Peterborough artists the chance to showcase their work.

And the coastal drift theme of the artwork by the group called View 5 fits snugly alongside the watering hole's original fixtures including the bar.

The artists have transformed the space with their paintings, murals and sculptures and in a matter of hours even sold some paintings and bags.

Textile artist Kathryn Moore said: "This is such a fantastic opportunity for not only our group but also people in the city to come and see the art and us working and creating.

"There is nothing else like it in the city and the nearest art gallery is at Norman Cross.

"People can pop in while shopping and experience something a bit different, and it's nice to get a few sales at the same time."

The artists have even had some hopeful punters hoping to grab a pint but stumbling on the gallery instead.

Fellow textile artist Anita Bruce said anything that publicised the arts in the city had to be a good thing.

She said: "The main thing is to be able to work together and collaborate on our forthcoming exhibition."

The impromptu gallery will be there until December 19 but the Queensgate Limited Partnership still remain tight-lipped over the long-term future of the former pub.

The partnership has applied to Peterborough City Council to transfer the premises' licence from former licensees Greene King Brewing and Retailing Limited.

But for now Queensgate centre director Roger Hutchings said they were delighted with its temporary users.

He said: "It's great news that the empty premises are being temporarily used for something that everybody can enjoy."
