TWO city pupils have beaten almost a quarter of a million entries to gain awards in a national maths challenge.Rana Mittra (13) and Kealan Johns (11), from The King’s School in Park Road, Peterborough, gained gold and bronze distinctions in the Junior mathematics Olympiad national challenge to get into the top 170 junior maths pupils in the country.
Rana’s gold award gets him a top 50 ranking in the country, while Kealan, who is a Year 7 pupil, reached the top 170 from an initial entry of about 250,000.
They had to complete a two-hour paper solving maths problems in the Olympiad challenge.
Head of mathematics at the school Dennis Pinshon said: “This is a great achievement for these young mathematicans. They will now be invited on a mentoring scheme run through the University of Leeds, which will help them to develop maths in future challenges in a wider variety of contexts.”
Kealan said: “It was much harder than I expected, but I hope this will now help me with the rest of my school work.
“I would like to be a scientist or a doctor when I leave education.”
Rana, who would like to take up a career using science or maths, added: “My parents don’t know my result yet, but I bet they will be very proud.”
