New plans for £480m North Westgate transformation

THE people behind the redevelopment of the North Westgate area have unveiled new plans following months of public consultation.

THE people behind the redevelopment of the North Westgate area have unveiled new plans following months of public consultation.Instead of moving the bus station as previously proposed, a "cathedral like" structure will instead tower over a revamped interchange on its current site containing shops and a new car park.

Under the reworked proposals, which developers insist could still become reality by 2013:

The Clare, Royce, and Cavell multi-storey car parks will be demolished as before, but the Perkins multi-storey will be retained and refurbished.

Car parking will not be concentrated in two new multi-storeys with a combined capacity of 3,300 spaces, but more widely spread over four car parks of 392, 600, and 1,300 plus the bus station car park, giving 2,892 spaces.

A multiplex cinema of around 10 screens is now on the edge of the development at Bourges Boulevard, so that it becomes more visible.

But there is no space in the rejigged plans for The Brewery Tap, which still faces the wrecking ball, despite the objections of protesters who mounted a "Don't Scrap The Tap" campaign.
