New boating facilities on river
BOATERS are set to have their feet firmly on dry land again after work started on a new £100,000 landing stage along the River Nene.
BOATERS are set to have their feet firmly on dry land again after work started on a new 100,000 landing stage along the River Nene.Work to replace the existing timber and steel landing stage downstream of the Dog and Doublet lock near Whittlesey was postponed in April following concerns over nesting birds on the neighbouring Site of Specific Scientific Interest.
But the Environment Agency finally got the go-ahead and work began last week. It is expected the new floating deck, complete with bridge to link it to the river bank, will be ready to use by the end of August.
Project manager Bill McDonald, the agency’s waterways improvement engineer, said: “The new landing stage will help ensure the safety of boaters when boarding or leaving their craft.
“As the new deck is built to float it can be used easily, whatever the tide, and the non-slip decking will further help to prevent accidents.”
