Outraged residents of Netherton blighted by anti-social behaviour have been left dismayed after a new shop was granted a premises licence.Soon-to-open Netherton Food and Wine shop, in Winslow Road, Netherton, Peterborough, has been given permission to serve alcohol from 9am to 10pm every day, following a licensing meeting yesterday.
Although the selling hours are significantly reduced from the owner's original application – from 7am to 2am – residents of the area remain disappointed.
Spokesperson for Netherton Neighbourhood Association Eric Dent, said: "I don't think that it is at all helpful to the environment of the area."
The new shop's licence was granted during a licensing sub-committee meeting in the council chamber at the town hall yesterday.
Applicant, Alais Alizada, who already runs a shop in Star Road, Peterborough, had already reduced his intended hours to sell alcohol following mediation with the police. Mr Alizada had revised the hours to sell alcohol to from between 8am and 11pm – but that still didn't please a number of residents.
In total, the council received 17 objections – including ward councillor Matthew Dalton – and one collectively from Netherton Neighbourhood Association.
A petition against the plans with 17 signatures was also submitted.
The main thrust of the objections related to "potential increase of existing alcohol related incidents and anti-social behaviour" in the area, but also included noise and increase in litter.
However, in granting the licence, the committee chairman Harry Newton said: "From 9am, all of the nearby schoolchildren will be in school.
"The committee is satisfied on the balance of probabilities, the restricted new premises licence would not create public noise, increase litter and anti-social behaviour."
However, Mr Dent disagreed, but admitted: "The hours that have been allowed are very similar to previous alcohol selling in that site of the new shop."
Cllr Dalton, who wanted the hours reduced further, added: "I'm reasonably happy with the outcome, but I'm disappointed the committee didn't decide to close the hours at 9pm."
Speaking after the meeting, a delighted Mr Alizada said the shop would be opening in the coming months.
