Muslim women get together for new group

A NEW group has been created to give Muslim women in Peterborough a voice in their community. From coffee mornings in primary schools to homework courses for parents to support their children, the Peterborough Muslim Women’s Forum is brimming with ideas to encourage women to be more involved in the community.
The forum is a group of 15 women, from various religious denominations and ethnic backgrounds, who will work on these projects over the coming months.
The Greater Peterborough Partnership (GPP) is behind the group, and the forum should go live with its website in the next few weeks.
GPP women’s co-ordinator Rehana Kauser said: “Essentially, its purpose is to give Muslim women in Peterborough a voice.
“We felt Muslim women did not have a voice and weren’t involved in important decision-making processes that affects them and their children, such as not coming forward to be school governors.
“We believe the only way forward is if we help make them more aware of things that concern them in the community so they can be empowered and become more involved in these processes.”
Coffee mornings run by the forum for mothers to chat to each other and talk to people from health and community organisations will be starting at two primary schools in Peterborough in October.
One will be held on Tuesdays at The Beeches Primary School, in Beech Avenue, from 9am to 10am, and the other will be held on Fridays at Thorpe Primary School, in Atherstone Avenue, Netherton from 8.45am to 9.45am.
