Police say the car - a maroon Toyota Yaris VVTi - was heading east towards Peterborough when it left the road.

It collided with trees nearby.Emergency services, including two fire engines and a rescue vehicle, were called to the scene.

They arrived to find the driver - a 59-year-old man from nearby Warmington, in Northamptonshire - trapped.

The air ambulance, carrying Dr Adam Manson and critical care paramedic Simon Standen from Magpas, was also scrambled to the scene.

Magpas is an emergency medical charity for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

It operates the Emergency Medical Team, which is made up of highly trained doctors and paramedics.

They fly on the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Cambridgeshire police helicopter to the scenes of serious incidents, such as road traffic collisions, across the region.

They were supported at this incident by an amublance crew from East Anglian Amublance Trust.

Deborah Florence, spokesperson for Magpas, said: "The patient was trapped in his car for an hour and was eventually cut free by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"He was found to have serious chest and spinal injuries and was treated on scene.

"Thanks to the very sophisticated training Magpas volunteer doctors and paramedics receive, our Emergency Medical Team were able to deliver an advanced level of pre-hospital medical care at the scene.

"It is through our close working partnerships with the East of England Ambulance Trust that we are able to deliver such a rapid and coordinated response to anywhere in the East of England."

The motorist was later taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, by road with both the doctor and the paramedic escorting him.
