Model Lydia's career behind the camera

REIGNING Miss Peterborough and professional model Lydia Fahy is all too used to staring down a camera lens in the course of a day's work. But the 23-year-old Miss England finalist could soon be establishing herself on the other side of the shutter as her passion for photography rapidly transforms into a blossoming vocation.

Despite only buying her first serious camera earlier this year, Lydia has been busy making a name for herself as an emerging talent and has already seen her work showcased on national television.

Although she has not struggled for modelling work since she was crowned Miss Peterborough last May, she believes her increasingly successful sideline could eventually take over.

"The photography has snowballed so much for me in only a few short months," Lydia said.

"These days, when I tell my family and friends I'm in a magazine, they don't know whether it's me in front of the camera or my photography from behind it.

"It's hopefully something I can make a transition to when I get older and I'm finished with modelling, but if I had to choose between the two for a career, I would have to go for photography.

"As a model you basically turn up to jobs and do whatever it is you're told to do, but photography gives you so much freedom to express yourself creatively."

Lydia, who lives in North Bretton, Peterborough, first began taking and editing pictures for her modelling portfolio when she was trying to make it in the profession at the age of 15.

Her modelling career has since taken off, and she fits in photoshoots for the likes of Debenhams, Reebok and Kay West handbags, as well as catwalk work for TopShop, Gap and H&M, alongside her part-time administration job for hire firm Andrew Sykes in Fengate, Peterborough.

Meanwhile, she has continued to develop her skills behind the camera and uses computer editing software to add her own touch to many of her portfolio pictures.

She also plans to use her developing skills to launch a scheme helping young models at the beginning of their careers to get a foothold in the fashion industry.

She said: "I want to be there for local girls who feel they have got what it takes and need some advice on where they go next in modelling because it's so difficult to know who to trust.

"For those who I feel have real potential, I will be shooting them for free over the summer so they can develop their portfolios."
