Millfield: Councillor calls for action against street fly-tip blight

FLY-TIPPERS are continually using the corner of a street opposite a £3 million mosque to dump beds, mattresses and other household items.

Cllr Mohammed Jamil has highlighted the problem blighting the junction of Link Street and Gladstone Street, in Millfield, which has become a haven for fly-tippers in recent months.

It is a stone’s throw from the Faizan-e-Madina mosque and Cllr Jamil says he has now received a number of complaints from nearby residents.

He says that every time a mess appears on the side of the street a call is made to Enterprise Peterborough for it to be cleared up, yet within days of it being cleared yet more rubbish has been dumped there.

He said: “To their credit, Enterprise do come and clear the mess every time it’s reported, but it seems that every time they do, someone comes along to dump more stuff.

“The dumping is happening during the night. Many of the residents said they would confront the person if they were doing it during the day.

“We really need to find a solution to this because it keeps happening.”

Cllr Jamil has said he has considered asking the mosque to utilise some of its CCTV cameras to try and catch the culprits.

But he added: “I understand, though, that those cameras are for the protection of the mosque itself. We need a more permanent solution in the street.

“It has been going on for about six months now and we’ve seen mattresses, beds, cupboards and old sofas left there.

“It could actually just be one person doing it again and again.”

A Peterborough City Council spokeswoman said: “We are aware of this site and will be instructing Enterprise to clear it.”

If the council was able to clear the flytipping near Newborough, there is no reason why they should not use similar techniques at this site. Perhaps the employment of a flying squad (the humorous opportunities!) to arrest people as soon as they have tipped. Then use community service to make these people clear up other sites for a year.
