Mayor inspects pictures of Katharine of Aragon

BUDDING artists have used their creative flair to create their own masterpiece of a historic woman.

BUDDING artists have used their creative flair to create their own masterpiece of a historic woman.Schools across Peterborough were invited to take part in a competition to create their own portrait of the former queen, Katharine of Aragon.

The competition was organised as part of the city's annual remembrance service which commemorates the life of Katharine, first wife of Henry VIII, who was buried at Peterborough Cathedral.

The winners were Bushfield College's Rebecca Martin and Peterborough High School's Sian Youens.

International links officer for Peterborough City Council Elizabeth Storr said: "We have been running this competition since 2006, and this year saw our biggest number of entries yet.

"All the entries were of a very high standard, full of colour and life.

"Tudor history and Spanish are important elements of the school curriculum."

More than 300 children from schools across the city will commemorate the 473rd anniversary of the burial of Katharine of Aragon at the cathedral on Thursday.

The event will see pupils, many dressed in Tudor costumes, joining civic leaders and dignitaries, to remember the life of the queen.

It will also mark the 23rd anniversary of Peterborough's twinning link with Alcala de Henares, Katharine's birthplace in Spain.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the service.
