OLYMPIC gymnastic sensation Louis Smith is famous for his impeccable balance, sleek lines and polished performances on the pommel horse. And now the former teenage sensation, hopes he can celebrate his move into his 20s with a car to match.
The elite Eye athlete toasted his 20th birthday yesterday by picking up his new 24,000 Scirocco car from city Volkswagen dealer Cooks of Peterborough.
And with a built in sat-nav system in his plush new motor Louis says there is no danger of him getting lost on his way to training for London 2012 at his gym in Huntingdon.
He said: "Now I can get to the gym not only quickly, but stylishly as well, which is great.
"I would really like to thank managing director – Mike Thilo from Radio Systems – as he promised me he would get me a car if I medalled in Beijing.
"I would also like to thank the garage for sorting it out for me so quickly.
The Evening Telegraph spoke to Louis minutes before he was poised to attempt a Guiness World Record for the highest number of flares on a pommel horse.
And with a target of 46 to beat Louis, like any Olympic athlete had prepared carefully – by having a curry and a sponge pudding.
But the gymnast said he would remain tight-lipped on his attempt and said the paper like everyone would have to wait to see the result on Sky 1 in June.
He added: "Training is going well and I am making steady progress, but the best news is that I don't have any injuries at the moment."
Sales manager at the showroom, in Storeys Bar Road, Fengate, Rod Smith, said: "It is always a pleasure to have someone of Louis's stature come and buy a car from us.
"I think he had seen the new Scirocco advertised, so when he came in to take a closer look he fell in love with it."
