MOTORISTS have been caught dicing with death under the influence of drugs and alcohol in a two-day police swoop on the busy A1(M).Dozens of officers from the roads policing unit and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) descended on the Sawtry area of the A1(M) near Peterborough, as part of the 16-hour crackdown to target HGV drivers and everyday motorists ignoring road safety rules.

In total, more than 30 offences were identified during the operation on Friday and Saturday, including one person arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and two people arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, while four vehicles were seized as they were not insured.

A further six motorists were caught speeding and two suspected stolen vehicles were recovered.

Three lorry drivers were issued prohibitions for driving over their permitted hours, and another three drivers were issued with fixed penalty notices for driving with no insurance.

Sergeant Heath Gregory, who ran the operation, said: "The operation was targeting drivers of HGVs who were committing motoring offences.

"Over the two days we identified a number of offences and several people were arrested.

"This is part of ongoing work to make the roads safer and ensure those who break the law while driving are caught and dealt with."

A police spokeswoman added that the operation had been a success and stressed that drivers ignoring the rules of the road would be caught.

She said: "Ideally, we don't want to catch anyone breaking the law, however this two-day operation was successful and resulted in more than 30 drivers being targeted. Although the operation was designed to target lorry drivers, we also caught a number of car drivers ignoring the law."
