Lord Archer raises lots of cash for city hospice at auction

GUESTS at an auction at Peterborough Cathedral raised almost £30,000 for one of the city's best-loved charities on Saturday night.

GUESTS at an auction at Peterborough Cathedral raised almost 30,000 for one of the city's best-loved charities on Saturday night.Auctioneer Lord Jeffrey Archer once again brought the gavel down on the annual Light Fantastic event, which raised the sizeable sum for Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall hospice.

The money will go towards the repair of the ceiling at the Thorpe Road hospice, which had prevented the event from taking place at its usual venue.

It was the fifth year the event had been held, but it was the last for chairwoman Sarah Jackson, wife of Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson.

She said: “We have raised more than 100,000 of much-needed funds.

“I would like to thank my fellow committee members and Lord Archer for all their help and support.”

In all, 13 items were auctioned off – ranging from dinners at smart restaurants to holidays to more than 100 willing guests at the champagne evening.

Lord Archer said: “This is a fantastic event in which I have been very pleased to help, and this year it took place at a truly marvellous venue.”
