Leak puts pool out of action

ON the hottest day of the year so far, bathers longing for a cool dip in the city's premier swimming pool were left hot and bothered.A burst water main meant the Regional Pool and Fitness Centre, in Bishop’s Road, Peterborough, had to be shut all day yesterday – and bosses said they could not say for certain when it would reopen.

A duty manager spotted the leak on his early morning round and because there was no running water available, the decision was made to close the building until the problem was fixed.

The news could not have come at a worse time, with the heatwave driving people to find new ways to cool down.

It also came as police warned people against jumping into lakes, rivers and reservoirs on hot days after reports youngsters were risking their lives by diving into water at Whittlesey Dyke and Orton Mere.

Monitoring officer for Peterborough City Council Chantelle Watson said it was an unfortunate situation but they could not put the safety of swimmers at risk.

She said: “Just outside the side of the pool, we found a water mains had burst.

“Garfield, one of our contractors, is working on it and its workers are digging at the moment.

“I have no idea when it will reopen.

“There is still water in the pool but we have no shower facilities or running water facilities, so we can’t have it open for the public.

“We don’t know the extent of the water leakage, but we are working flat out.”

She added: “It’s very unfortunate that this has happened, but we have the interests of the public at heart.

“We don’t want to offer half the facility – it’s pointless for them.”

She said people could use the nearby open air Lido in the meantime and suggested it was an even better option for those wanting to cool down.
