BREAKING NEWS 8am: MOTORISTS who use illegal number plates are being targeted by police this month as part of a crackdown.Police will be conducting regular checks on the county's roads issuing 30 Fixed Penalty Notices and Vehicle Defect Retification Scheme, where motorists have 14 days to change the plate.

Last month (November) 78 motorists were issued fixed penalties for illegal number plates.

Sergeant Simon Goldsmith said: "Over the next few weeks we will continue to conduct regular road checks to target vehicles with illegal number plates.

"Not only is it an offence to display these plates but it also creates problems with vehicle identification."

The most common offences in relation to number plates are changing the font and spacing of the registration.

Anyone caught displaying an illegal number plate more then twice could have the number revoked by the DVLA.

Sergeant Goldsmith added: "Motorists may think that their illegal number plate looks good but the fact is they are breaking the law.

"I would urge anyone who is currently driving around with an illegal number plate to replace it to avoid a fine."
